Giving Back Off The Court

Volunteering hasn’t always been a part of the travel itinerary for BIP volleyball tours. It wasn’t until teams started visiting Nicaragua back in 2007 that we shifted our focus to community service and empowerment in the travel destinations that we visit.  It originally started with a habit of bringing down extra suitcases filled with school supplies and sports equipment for local schools. It eventually expanded into a movement to empower marginalized communities by providing access to sports, education, and employment with every volleyball tour we run in Central and South America.

On our Costa Rica volleyball tours visiting teams are planting endangered trees in the rainforest, visiting schools for people with disabilities and hosting youth volleyball clinics for local club teams. In Puerto Rico teams are aiding local NGO’s on the ground with clean-up and rehabilitation from Hurricane Maria. Aside from the volleyball matches, the volunteering has become the most important and meaningful piece of every volleyball team’s travel experience. Here’s a recap of the most impactful trips from 2019.

JJVA Volleyball Club in Puerto Rico

JJVA Volleyball Club volunteering in Puerto Rico

On June 9-15, 2019, CJ Sherman and John Alipio led a mixed club team with players from JJVA (Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association), A5 and North Atlanta volleyball clubs to Puerto Rico on one of the most impactful trips we’ve experienced yet. In preparation for the Puerto Rico volleyball tour, the team collected 192 new sports bras in partnership with a non-profit organization called the Sports Bra Project. The team delivered the sports bras to Puerto Rico in an effort to remove barriers to girls’ participation in sports. The team aided in hurricane rehabilitation and clean up along side Programa de Educacion Comunal de Entrega y Servicio (P.E.C.E.S) in Southeastern Puerto Rico, one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Maria. The team also volunteered at a kids camp in the Jardín Botánico de la UPR and distributed coloring books donated by USA volleyball.

Bethel University Volleyball in Costa Rica

Bethel University Volleyball at Casa Hogar

On May 25 – June 1, 2019 Bethel University women’s team took an 8 day volleyball tour in Costa Rica with a travel itinerary jam-packed full of community service. Before the team even checked-in to their hotel on the first day, they led a youth clinic and delivered boxes full of jerseys, kneepads, spandex, volleyballs and camp shirts to the very grateful youth volleyball team in Liberia, Costa Rica. After a catching a few waves at Playa Tamarindo, the team made their way to Chichiagua Rainforest near La Fortuna. In response to the terrifying statistic that every minute 150 acres of rainforest gets destroyed on the planet, the Bethel Volleyball team planted a few dozen endangered native species of trees that will continue to grow (hopefully) for the next 600 years! And since the reforestation project is organized by expert farmers and craft chocolate makers, they also got to learn how to make chocolate. However the fun didn’t end in La Fortuna. The climax of the trip was most definitely visiting Casa Hogar, the housing and employment program for adults with disabilities in the village of Naranjo. After touring the garden, recycling center and classrooms, Bethel volleyball joined the students on the dance floor and shared a meal together. The perfect way to wrap up the week in the spirit of Pura Vida!

Iowa State Volleyball in Peru & Argentina

The Iowa State women’s volleyball team went on a 14 day tour through Argentina and Peru from June 1 – 14, 2019. In addition to playing volleyball and sightseeing in spectacular cities such as Buenos Aires, Cuzco and Lima, the team visited Machu Picchu. The team also collected and distributed sports bras with the Sports Bra Project to youth athletes in need. Along the way the team hosted youth volleyball clinics in Lima and Ollantaytambo in an effort to share knowledge and resources while growing the love of the game among aspiring young players in South America.

Ohio State Volleyball in Brazil and Peru

Ohio State Volleyball Team in Saquarema

The Ohio State volleyball team traveled through Brazil and Peru from June 8-19, 2019. In Saquarema, Brazil the team hosted a youth volleyball clinic and played matches at the national team training center. In Lima Peru Ohio State played two matches against the youth national team. In between matches the team visited ENEA, an art program for adults with disabilities and hosted a volleyball clinic at Evteka for nearly 100 girls between the ages of 8 and 14 years. After hiking Machu Picchu, Ohio State also hosted a volleyball clinic at the Institution Educativa Técnica Mixta for 100 kids.

University of Kentucky Volleyball in Brazil

The University of Kentucky volleyball team traveled through Brazil from May 24th – June 3rd, 2019. On their trip to Brazil the program wanted to find a way to volunteer and give back to the people of the country, therefore BIP located an elementary school Saquarema, just off the campus of the Brazilian National Training Facility. Pablo, the tour guide, introduced the team to each classroom and followed up our introduction with a quick lesson on how to say “Go Cats”! After touring the school they hosted a volleyball clinic for the older students in the gym. They practiced each skill of the game, broke into groups to pepper, and played games with ~40 kids. After taking pictures, sharing hugs and saying goodbyes, the team left behind volleyballs for the students. Kristen Sanford, Kentucky Volleyball’s Director of Operation, had this to say about her team’s experience in Brazil, “The perspective that this experience brought to the trip played a great impact on our group. We’ll remember this day for years!”

International Beach Volleyball Tours

College of Charleston Beach Volleyball Tour in Puerto Rico

Since beach volleyball’s emergence as an NCAA sport 2015, it has become one of the fastest growing sports nationwide. The AVCA claims that beach volleyball, formally known as sand volleyball, “made the quickest transition from an emerging sport to a championship sport in NCAA history. It’s also the fastest growing NCAA sport over the last five years in Division I.” You no longer need to live on or near the beach in a mild climate to play year round beach volleyball. Colleges across the country are building sand courts on campus, adding beach programs and hosting summer camps.

However the growth in the sport of beach volleyball isn’t limited to only the United States. We’re finding the sport’s increased popularity echoed across continents. Countries such as Slovenia, Croatia and Italy have indoor and outdoor beach volleyball training facilities to offer year-round competition. Costa Rica and Puerto Rico also enjoy active year-round youth development programs and beach tournaments.  In 2016, Costa Rica sent their first ever beach volleyball team to the Olympics with the qualification of Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

USC Beach Volleyball Tour in Europe

At BIP, we’ve loved being a part of the beach volleyball action happening around the globe. In May of 2015, directly after the USC women’s team won the inaugural NCAA sand volleyball national championships, we hosted them on a competitive beach volleyball tour throughout Austria, Croatia and Italy. You can read the USC’s European travel blog here as they recap travel highlights and tournament play in the Mizuno Beach Volley Marathon® in Bibione.  The USC women’s beach volleyball team is returning to Europe in May, 2019.

College of Charleston Beach Volleyball Tour in Puerto Rico

The College of Charleston’s Beach Volleyball team toured Nicaragua in March of 2015 and Puerto Rico in March of 2019. Jason Kepner, the College of Charleston Head Women’s volleyball Coach, reflects upon his team’s experience  here, “This is our second trip with BIP and I couldn’t have been happier with our experience.  Brooke is outstanding with planning and organizing a great experience for our team.  She was awesome at meeting all our needs and providing an opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico that our girls will never forget. “

In 2019, UCLA beach volleyball will head to Europe for international competition this summer and West Valley College take a Costa Rica volleyball tour to compete in a beach tournament at the national team training center in San Jose. We looking forward to expanding the opportunities for beach volleyball tournaments and tours available to high school, club and college beach volleyball players. Contact us if you’re interested in taking your beach volleyball team overseas for a camp, tournament and tour.

Highlights from Stanford Tour

The Stanford Women’s volleyball team traveled to Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy with BIP this summer. As Stanford approaches the 2018 season ranked #1 in the AVCA preseason coaches poll, head volleyball coach Kevin Hambly reflects upon the purpose and impact of the trip.

“It was significant in several ways”, Hambly reflects, “first, it was exciting to get the freshmen involved. It’s a good step for them to get around the team and get integrated socially, but also volleyball-wise for team bonding in general. You always grow closer as a team when you travel. And to have this extended amount of time, it was great for the team to be around each other and grow closer.”

“The competition I thought was also very good”, explains Hambly,  “it was nice to play without worrying about winning and losing on some level because we could play a lot of players that haven’t really gotten the chance to play a lot. We did two separate teams.”

For the players it was a trip of many first experiences.  It was the first time traveling outside of the United States for some.  For many it was the first time playing volleyball in Europe. Getting to see new countries, experience a variety of cultures and get exposed to a very different style of volleyball were all listed among the team’s highlights. Getting to play the national teams of each country was the experience of a lifetime.

Watch the full highlight video of Stanford Women’s Volleyball tour to Europe below.

Remember Puerto Rico

As you wander through the cobblestone streets of old town San Juan lined with pastel colored colonial buildings and Puerto Rican flags proudly waiving from balconies, it’s tempting for a visiting tourist to forget, or ignore, the aftermath of hurricane Maria. It’s easy to get carried away by the lively music, ice-cold frappes (fruit smoothies) and deliciously rich seafood cuisine on offer. Puerto Rico’s sandy white beaches and surrounding teal blue Caribbean Sea have a way of making you feel the presence of paradise.

However if you talk to anyone on the island who lived through the experience, there is no forgetting when the lights went out on September 20, 2017 –  the night that Hurricane Maria, a category 5 storm, made direct landfall on Puerto Rico. Winds reaching 175 mph lashed out on the island for over 30 consecutive hours tearing down power lines, ripping apart rooftops and shattering windows in homes, restaurants, churches and commercial office buildings. Maria’s fingerprints are everywhere; among trees with amputated branches, bent sign posts, crushed cars and collapsed rooftops. Bridges were washed away. Power lines were torn and left dangerously dangling. A coastal surge filled homes with several feet of muddy water leaving behind dangerous mold and an eery trail of dark water stains. Texas Volleyball European Tour

The University of Texas Women’s volleyball team traveled to Slovenia and Italy this summer to play volleyball against top European professional clubs, bond as a team with their incoming freshmen and expand their world view through exposure to different cultures.  In this video the Longhorns reflect upon their team trip to Europe, its value and how it prepared them for their upcoming season.

“We use this trip also to connect, to build trust, to learn lines of communication and to establish our culture and make it stronger. They played against a bunch of national teams with some older players that have played this game a lot longer than they have. To see the different styles of volleyball, the different speeds of volleyball, really is a huge benefit to our program. Also for them [the freshmen] to be able to interact and get some of the nerves out, to understand the intensity of the game, the speed of the game and to build that trust with our captains in knowing that they’re an important facet to this year’s success is priceless.” – Jerritt Elliott, University of Texas Volleyball Head Coach.

“Being able to play the pro teams there was something that was really unique for all of us and I think it gave us a different type of challenge.” – Ashley Shook, Sophomore Setter

“It’s really nice to get put in uncomfortable situations very early so we can see how we respond to them. Being able to go play European teams that play a lot differently than teams in the US was very helpful.”- Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani, Senior Outside Hitter
